This wine is sourced from an old dry grown vineyard with vines dating back to the early 1900’s from what we consider one of the Barossa Valley’s finest blocks. 2013/2014 growing season was near on perfect. An ideal vintage, which gave us the benefit of perfectly, ripened fruit. The smooth flow of vintage allowed us to select specific fruit parcels and allowed us to define the wine as much in the vineyard as the winery. These grapes are brought into the winery, and crushed into old vats where the fermentation is initiated by “wild” yeasts found on the grape skins. Careful extraction and short post fermentation maceration is followed by soft pressing. The wine is transferred into brand new oak barrels where the malolactic fermentation is completed before racking and maturation for a further 24 months in barrels. A careful assemblage and barrel selection is followed by minimal filtration and bottling then further aging prior to release. About the Viking Odin's Honour Reserve Shiraz 2002 The colour of this wine is holding up very well – totally opaque black dark red with very deep black brick red hue. The nose displays good intensity with aromas of liquorice and black plum followed by some dark chocolate, mocha and vanilla oak with some leathery overtones beginning to emerge. Rich, full bodied opulent palate flavours of liquorice, plum jam and dark chocolate followed by vanillin oak, some leather and spice. Velvet smooth soft tannins with long aftertaste of liquorice, plum jam, dark chocolate, leather and spice. With 50-year-old, dry-grown and near-organic vineyards yielding 1-1.5 tonnes per acre in Marananga, Viking Wines was ‘discovered' by Robert Parker Jr with inevitable consequences for the price of its top Shiraz. There are 5ha of shiraz and 3ha of cabernet sauvignon. The Odin's Honour wines (made by sister company Tord-Viking Wines) also come from old (20-100 years) dry-grown vines around Marananga and Greenock.
