Vale D. Maria Douro Tinto 2017
The 2017 Tinto (Quinta Vale D. Maria) is a field blend from old vines aged for 21 months in 65% new French barriques. It comes in at 15% alcohol. This was a few weeks from bottling when seen, but it was the final blend. Stunning fruit, impressive concentration and pure power add up to a potentially big star here. The finish is long—indeed, you'd better clear your palate before going on to the next wine. The ripe and flavorful fruit is delicious just now too. There seems to be little doubt that this is a star, the only question in its youth being how big a star. It seems impressive so far, one of the best yet in the brand. There were 16,500 bottles produced, plus some large-format bottles. It will be released in October. Give it some time in the cellar to settle down.
