Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo Douro Grande Reserva Referéncia 2017
The 2017 Grande Reserva Referência is the Tinta Roriz-dominated blend, the last 25% being a field blend from old vines. It was aged for 12 months in 70% new French oak and comes in at 14.3% alcohol. If the other two Grande Reservas seem sensational, this is perhaps not quite as impressive this year, at least not now. That's relative, to be sure. Like the others, it was a few weeks from bottling but the final blend. Its typical structure is there—the Tinta Roriz always provides lots of tannins—but it doesn't, perhaps, show the same feeling of concentration. That might be the perception of balance, since this is both very tight and very bright, with very appealing freshness. Tight, closed and stern, this is going to need some time to show its stuff. Then, it should age for a couple of decades or more. There were 375 cases produced.
