Mas del Périé - Fabien Jouves Bloc B763 2017
100% Malbec from 50 year old vines. The bottom of this special plot is limestone interspersed with iron minerals. Manual harvest, all organically processed. No fining, no filtration and minimal use of sulfur. The wine ferments naturally in a concrete tank for 30 days, then aged in egg-shaped vats for 22 months. Extremely fine but rich black cherry on the nose, then there are hints of black currant and maybe a hint of sloe. Then spicy flavors mingle, especially liquorice and violets. But always black cherry. Insanely beguiling. It takes a while before I take the first sip ... But also extremely cherry in the mouth. Pushing with great pressure, but at the same time extremely fresh. The acidity and the tannin are also perfectly balanced in terms of this freshness. Mouth-filling but with fantastic straight-line running. After the first rush, fine salt settles on the tongue and the mineral side comes into play. This extends into reverberation. Impressive Malbec - especially because of the absence of wood. Powerful, precise and fine. Strong piece of Cahor.
