Luddite Shiraz 2015
A huge success among fans of Luddite. Luddite's Shiraz 2015 comes from un-irrigated bushvines in Bot River. The floors are shaped by weathered slate. The grapes were hand picked and pressed and fermented with their own yeast. This was followed by maturity in French and Hungarian oak barrels, with only a small part made of new wood. After two years of aging, the wine is drawn off and unfiltered, filled with a minimal amount of sulfur. Niels numbered each of the 5900 filled bottles by hand - just insane! On the nose these ripe fruits. Red and black currants, dark cherries, plums, blackberries and blueberries. In addition, floral and herbal notes of violet and rosemary, licorice, tobacco, cedar, mint, eucalyptus, a little smoke, spicy undergrowth and a hint of mocha. Extremely dense, powerful and complex. The palate is then very elegant, silky and fresh. The freshness is reminiscent of a typical Shiraz from the Rhone, but also a small touch of Australia resonates here. The minerality of the slate comes through and again these wonderfully dark berries come from the nose. The tannins are noticeable, but very fine and mouth-filling. The spicy aftertaste seems endless and leaves a fruity-elegant overall impression. A great wine with a fascinating structure. South Africa at its best!
