Blending grape varieties in Sharis reconciles the culturally acquired expectations of the local consumer with those of the international wine lover, forming a link between Friuli and the rest of the world. From a winemaking point of view, blending gives the wine balance and complexity. On its own, Ribolla Gialla has aromatics that are not particularly assertive, but its contribution is essential, for it provides the blend with texture, freshness, and vivacity.
Variety: Chardonnay - Ribolla Gialla
The grapes are carefully destemmed and left to macerate for a short period. Next, the fruit is soft crushed. The must obtain then allowed to settle. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks.
After fermentation, the wine is left on the lees for six months. The bottled wine is aged in temperature-controlled binning cellars for a minimum of two months.
Nose: Intense and captivating. Elegant notes of white and yellow flowers: jasmine, lily of the valley, golden lily and mimosa with fresh hints of lime, cherry plum, and Golden apple. Lemon custard in the finish.
Palate: Lively, balanced, and enveloping. Pleasant presence of ripe white fruit, loquat, white cherry, gooseberry, and kiwi. Balsamic notes at the close and good persistence with a citrus aftertaste.
Livio Felluga Sharis is made with manually harvested grapes from plots with predominantly loam and sandstone soils. When the grapes reach the winery, the clusters are destemmed and allowed to macerate for a short time and then gently pressed to obtain the must that is clarified by decantation. Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. The resulting wine ages with its fine lees for six months. It finishes refining in the bottle for a couple of months before going to market.
The combination of both varieties, one international and the other native, brings balance and complexity to the wine and represents a union between Friuli and the rest of the world. On the one hand, the Chardonnay variety gives the coupage an aromatic character while the Ribolla Gialla grape gives it texture and vivacity. Livio Felluga is one of the great winemaking names in Italy. He is considered “the father” of Friuli winemaking. The latter, after World War II, saw his dream come to life, producing wines in the Rosazzo region, where he dedicated his life to the vineyards.
