Le Font de Tonin Gigondas 2017
The single layer at a height of 400 meters on only a tiny hectare, which consists 90% of Grenache over 50 years and 10% of Mourvedre over 70 years. The Grenache will not be unraveled, the Mourvedre will. The fermentation takes place in cement, the wine is given 6 weeks for this, which collects some of the harsh tannins. After fermentation, the Font de Tonin is aged in one to three-year barriques, but never in new wood. Due to the high altitude of La Bouissiere, harvesting is never done before mid-October. Of course, this gives a long time from flowering to harvesting, and the wines are correspondingly complex. The black Font de Tonin has an intoxicating nose and an extremely high flavor intensity. Rich fruit. The first impression is surprisingly yellow peach. Then comes wild strawberry, wild raspberry and plum. Some milk chocolate. Everything is very soft and lush, already in the nose. Showing buttery soft tannins. But like the normal Gigondas, there is no trace of jamminess. The additional Mourvedre brings fluffy freshness and an earthy mineral element to the style. The wine is absolutely ripe, but, you cannot repeat it often enough, never jammy, always staying on the extremely charming, lush side of the fruit. It is astonishing to register in the mouth that peach is also the first impression here. Only then does the red fruit come, plum in the first place, then wild strawberry, a very slight hint of blackberry behind it. A lot of milk chocolate, black cherry and some cassis. Everything is chubby. Butter-soft, fine tannins. Here also very full-bodied, meaty. Delicate sweetness that always stays on the finesse side. A bundle of fruit charms. Beautiful style, a great charmer, great, racy, intense dream wine full of excitement and drinking pleasure.
