Gigondas L'Argnee Vieilles Vignes 2018
Only one hectare, far below Clos de Tourelles, next to individual layers of Saint Cosme. Age-old vines over 100 years old, all Prephyloxera, so true to roots. Sandy soils. Completely unstacked, mashed as whole grapes and fermented spontaneously and aged in wood powder and tonneau. Processed biodynamically and certified organic. The floors are on the rocky bottom of Gigondas, but most of it is mostly light sand. That is also the reason why these can be Prephyloxera vines at all. Gigondas did particularly well in 2018, not only that crop failures were lower here because there was less mushroom pressure, but also because the freshness in Gigondas is amazing. Lots of black cherry, red and black currant, plus raspberry, garrigu spices, elder, a lot of undergrowth, a little rose hip, sea buckthorn. Exciting nose and fine at the same time, nothing is green, nothing presses, nothing comes out stinging, everything floating fine. The mouth is almost even finer than the nose promised, so fresh, totally playful, everything running on cherry and red, fresh plum. Do not misunderstand now, this is already a very mature wine, we are still in 2018. We have nothing green here, are in great opulence, but just playful on red and black cherry. Again this great undergrowth, elderberry, mint and eucalyptus, licorice behind, fine trace of salt that runs over the tongue in the middle. Immense reverberation with a lot of rock mass and salt, lasting for minutes. And yet, unlike 2016 and 2017, staying much finer, much more mature, that fits together perfectly. This wine is certainly one of the really big gigondas this year. A worthy follower of Saint Cosme's single location.
