Clos de Gat Har'El Syrah 2014
This delicious Israeli Syrah includes 15 percent Cabernet Sauvignon.Classic aromas of pepper and red fruit. Unfined and unfiltered this full bodied red has plenty of red fruit flavours and a slightly savoury edge from the cabernet sauvignon. It is rich and rounded with a long complex finish.
Vinification: Traditional vinification methods, the grapes are handpicked, after rigorous sorting and crushing they are transferred to open fermentation tanks. After ageing for 16 months in 70% new French oak barrels and racked every 4 – 6 months, the final blend is bottled without fining or filtering.
Tasting notes: The 2014 vintage clearly reflects the terroir characteristics inherent in the HAREL wines of Clos de Gat . The wine has a deep dense purple colour. On the nose it is intensely aromatic and complex, discreetly oaked, with classical spicy peppery and red fruit aromas. On the palate the wine is full bodied, well balanced, fresh with good acidity and well rounded tannins. The finish is long, lively and elegant.
Israeli producer, Clos de Gat, is situated in the foothills of the Judean mountains, bordering Israels biblical Ayalon Valley. An ancient wine press [ gat] which gives the winery its name, is located in the grounds of the modern winery, surrounded by 47 acres of vineyards. The region’s rolling hills and valleys have supported grapevine cultivation for thousands of years. The combination of thin topsoil on a bedrock of limestone, together with a unique micro-climate make it possible to grow grapes of outstanding quality. After all factors, however small, of soils, sub-soils, elevations and micro-climates had been taken into account, each plot was planted with the variety most likely to produce the highest level of fruit quality. They rely on the vineyard’s natural yeasts for the fermentation process, this gives the wines greater complexity.
