L'Arlot Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots 2016
The night of April 26-27 marks a turning point in 2016, as frost affected the buds and the first leaves, reducing the yields to a minimum. Fortunately, the quality did not degrade in the end, but the already small quantities became even scarcer and the best 2016s are already a sought-after treasure on the market due to the tiny harvest quantities and will probably remain so forever. After heavy rains in the first half of the year, the good summer in July and the season begin in mid-August in finally dry conditions, so that the grapes were able to fully ripen by the end of September. The harvest took place from September 27 to October 2 and produced aromatic, late-ripened grapes of brilliant quality and great freshness. Les Suchots borders Romanée St Vivant, Echezeaux and Richebourg and is therefore a direct neighbor of some of the largest locations on the Côte d’Or. This exquisite location in the fillet belt of the best terroirs of Vosne Romanée also explains the high price of this exceptional 1er Cru, which can often reach Grand Cru level in the best years. Here we have loamy, solid soil and massive limestone, here we have the perfect, slight slope, here we have everything the Pinot Noir loves and needs. On the nose, Les Suchots 2016 presents a refined, elegant and sweet bouquet with notes of forest berries, raspberries, blackberries and cranberries, great floral notes with violets, some tobacco, herb spice and very delicate oak notes from the noble burgundy wood. We do not build on structural strength and superficial power, but on expressiveness through the pure-toned fruit and the stylish style of the domain. The mouth is wonderful, polished, infinitely fine, dark berry, floral and spicy with this dark minerality of the nuits with the graphite notes and the smokiness. Complex and long and so stylish! Showing incredible potential and depth for a 1er Cru, that's actually Grand Cru level. It will take the wine from 5 to 7 years to fully open and then enjoy drinking for at least two decades.
