The organisation was formed in 1923 when a number of growers, facing uncertain economic conditions, grouped together under the leadership of the Abbé Balitrand to establish a winery. La Chablisienne received finished wines from its members, blended them and sold them mostly on the wholesale market. From the mid-1950s, however, the winery began to receive its supply as must, ensuring it had full control over the winemaking process. La Chablisienne has 300 members, whose vineyards cover nearly 25 percent of the region's 4700 hectares (11600 acres) and include wines from Petit Chablis to Grand Cru level.
